The Norwegian government revealed today its intention to temporarily prohibit the creation of new data centers dedicated to Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency mining activities. This initiative is expected to take effect in the near future.
The administration determined that reallocating electrical resources to different industrial and economic areas would more effectively serve the nation’s overall interests.
Karianne Tung, the Minister for Digitalization and Public Administration, stated, “The current Labour Party leadership is strongly committed to minimizing cryptocurrency mining activities within Norway.”
The Labour Party, which currently holds power, explained that the impending restriction is due to the high electricity demands of energy-intensive Bitcoin and crypto mining endeavors. They believe these operations offer limited advantages to the larger economy.
She further explained, “Extracting cryptocurrencies requires a significant amount of power but doesn’t create many jobs or generate much revenue for the local area.”
The government anticipates that “a temporary prohibition may be enacted sometime in the fall of 2025.”
