The digital token PUMP experienced a sharp decline, plummeting 12% in value within a single day. This downturn followed an announcement from the creators of Pump.fun indicating that a widely anticipated token distribution event is not imminent.
Following comments from Alon Cohen, a co-founder at Pump.fun, stating that a token distribution, while still a future consideration, would not be happening in the near future, the value of PUMP took a hit. The price receded by 12%, dipping below its initial coin offering (ICO) price point.
Investor Sentiment Sours After Airdrop Delay Announcement
PUMP had previously reached a high of $0.0067 after its ICO but had already lost more than half of its value prior to this recent drop. After Cohen’s statement, the token’s downward trend continued, and it traded below its $0.004 ICO value by the subsequent Tuesday.
Blockchain data reveals that significant PUMP holders were swiftly attempting to liquidate their positions. The analytics firm Lookonchain reported that two wallets, suspected to belong to investors from a private sale, incurred losses totaling $1.19 million. These wallets reportedly offloaded 1.25 billion PUMP tokens, worth approximately $3.8 million, at an average price of around $0.00305 each.
Holders of PUMP saw their fears confirmed on Wednesday when Alon Cohen, during a live conversation with Michael “ThreadGuy” Jerome, clarified that a token distribution is not currently being planned. Pump.fun, which launched in early 2024, gained rapid traction within the Solana ecosystem by streamlining the process of creating meme coins. This accessibility propelled the platform’s revenue to nearly $1 billion amidst the meme coin craze, a surge detailed here.
Cohen explained that the token distribution is still part of the long-term strategy but is being postponed due to prevailing economic conditions. Instead of relying on handouts, the team intends to rebuild interest and enthusiasm through organic means. One early adopter, claiming to have traded over $1 million worth of PUMP, criticized the team for allegedly “turning their back” on dedicated supporters.
