Good news for fans of high-speed action! The Crew Unlimited, a community-driven project designed to resurrect Ubisoft’s once-popular racing game, The Crew, has officially launched. This initiative aims to bring the game back to life after its official servers were shut down last year. The launch occurred on September 15th, and while the project shows great promise, the development team has already released a couple of quick fixes to address initial issues. They also want to clearly state that they aren’t responsible for problems arising from using incomplete or damaged game files obtained from unverified sources.
As previously reported, dedicated enthusiasts initiated The Crew Unlimited shortly after Ubisoft closed down the game’s online servers in March 2024, effectively rendering it unplayable. This shutdown inspired the community to create a custom server emulator, giving players who possess the original game files the opportunity to once again experience the thrills of The Crew.
The project’s release encountered some initial turbulence. A recent announcement on Discord by the project leader, whammy4, detailed that the team has provided “over 10 hours of non-stop tech support” since launch. A significant portion of the reported problems seem to be affecting users who did not legitimately acquire The Crew through Steam before attempting to use The Crew Unlimited.
The developer stated, “We’ve noticed that many users are using incomplete or damaged game files obtained through unofficial channels. We cannot guarantee the game’s functionality if you’ve sourced your files from such places. Players with valid Steam copies have generally experienced fewer issues, which is not surprising. Additionally, please understand that we cannot provide immediate, personalized support around the clock.”
Before the release, the developers clarified on their Discord FAQ page that they would not be distributing any game files. However, they also mentioned, “If you can run the game files, we cannot distinguish between legitimate and unofficial copies, so access will be granted.”
In addition to these clarifications, the team has released several fixes. The first, launcher update version 1.1.0.0, resolved issues where the default save file disappeared, preventing login, and fixed DateTime string errors. An “Apply” button was also added to the cheats section to reduce user confusion.
Following this update, two hotfixes were released. Version 1.1.1.0 corrected the automatic creation of a default “TCUPlayer” profile and the issue of blank save game names. Version 1.1.2.0 fixed a “logic error in the launcher” that resulted in players automatically being assigned the username “UserName” instead of the default “TCUPlayer” if they clicked “play” immediately.
On a personal note, a lasting memory of The Crew is the constant presence of Artic Monkeys’ ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ in my thoughts, regardless of what I did. I’m curious to know if this song is still frequently played in this community revival.
