Ripple has unveiled a strategic plan to enhance the quantum resistance of the XRP Ledger (XRPL) by 2028. This initiative comes in response to Google’s recent alert about potential quantum computing threats that could jeopardize cryptographic systems by 2032, even with a lower threshold of approximately 500,000 physical qubits than previously anticipated.

Steps Towards a Quantum-Resilient Ripple and XRP

As outlined in Ripple’s blog, the first step includes formulating contingency strategies in case Q-day (Quantum-Day) arrives sooner than projected. In this situation, Ripple plans to implement a “hard shift,” which would suspend account access through public keys and facilitate the transfer of funds to accounts secured against quantum threats.

The second step, anticipated in the first half of 2026, focuses on evaluating NIST-recommended cryptographic standards designed for quantum security, in collaboration with Project Eleven.

This assessment will shed light on how post-quantum solutions affect the XRPL, covering aspects such as transaction efficiency, costs, and storage capabilities. Ripple aims to utilize these findings for architectural modifications that address the challenges presented by post-quantum computing (PQC) technologies.

The third phase, scheduled for late 2026, will involve deploying these strategies on Devnet. This will enable developers to analyze the functionality and performance without impacting the existing network.

Simultaneously, Ripple will investigate utilizing PQC technology to enhance privacy for entities involved in tokenizing real-world assets.

Finally, Ripple will bring forth its validated PQC amendments, aiming for a full-scale transition after receiving community consent.

Advantages Over Bitcoin and Ethereum

Ripple stands out from Bitcoin and Ethereum by offering native key rotation, which allows users to change their cryptographic keys without needing to transfer their assets to new addresses in the face of quantum threats.

Moreover, the XRPL boasts an average block time of just 3-5 seconds. This significantly reduces the time a user’s public key remains exposed to quantum computers during transactions. In contrast, the average block times for Ethereum and Bitcoin are 12 seconds and 10 minutes, respectively.

As of the latest update, XRP is trading at $1.43, reflecting a daily increase of 0.95%. Charles Hoskinson of Cardano has suggested that the slower growth of Cardano is partly due to Ripple selling XRP to enhance its own operations.
