A month has elapsed since Netflix unveiled K-Pop Demon Hunters, a genre-bending creation that blends the world of K-Pop with supernatural battles. The animated film swiftly captured audience attention and its popularity remains undiminished. Currently, it holds the top spot on Netflix’s list of most-watched movies. Simultaneously, the fictional musical groups featured in the film, HUNTR/X and Saja Boys, are achieving significant success on global music platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music, even securing a position on Billboard’s Top 100. The question on many minds is: when will a sequel be released? While fans eagerly await news, no official announcement has been made.

In the interim, fans, particularly those involved in fanfiction, have channeled their enthusiasm into creating original stories inspired by the film. Within a short month, the K-Pop Demon Hunters universe has generated a substantial amount of fan-created content. The website Archive of Our Own currently hosts approximately 3,638 fics.

While fanfiction numbers alone are not a definitive measure of popularity, they should not be completely dismissed. As an avid Star Wars enthusiast and a consumer of fanfiction, the level of activity within the K-Pop Demon Hunters community appears remarkably high compared to other, more established franchises. For example, the Star Wars series Andor, which launched its second season in April (close to when K-Pop Demon Hunters debuted), has around 1,854 fics on Archive of Our Own. Even considering the critical acclaim surrounding Andor and the vastness of the Star Wars universe, the fanfiction output doesn’t match that of K-Pop Demon Hunters.

Admittedly, the target demographics differ significantly: Andor appeals to a mature audience, while K-Pop Demon Hunters likely resonates more with younger viewers. The demographic that creates fanworks for Andor may have fewer free hours due to responsibilities. Additionally, K-Pop Demon Hunters presents a more accessible narrative, not just due to its animated format. The K-Pop industry itself is a global phenomenon, spearheaded by groups like BTS, Blackpink, and TWICE. The music is just one aspect of the genre’s appeal, the personalities, styles of these K-Pop idols, and the bonds they have with their fans are also huge factors.

Nevertheless, given the K-Pop’s popularity, the volume of fanfiction generated for an animated film that Netflix launched with minimal marketing remains notable. Within a week of release, the film had already sparked around 600 fan stories, and thousands more were created within a few weeks. While it is possible that AI tools contributed to the creation, the number of people moved to expand the K-Pop Demon Hunters story is a testament to its appeal.

Perhaps it was inevitable. K-Pop Demon Hunters incorporates popular tropes often found in fanfiction, such as close female friendships, an enemies-to-lovers storyline, and the enticing concept of “unresolved feelings.” These elements resonate strongly with fanfiction writers, and the film provides fertile ground for their creativity. From developing the potential polyamorous relationship between the protagonists Rumi, Zoey, and Mira, to exploring the fake relationship between demon bad-boy Jinu and half-demon Rumi, there is a fanfic for everyone.

The creative output inspired by K-Pop Demon Hunters seems unlikely to diminish anytime soon. As of now, there are over 3,600 fan-created stories to delve into and enjoy.
