The much-anticipated Battlefield 6 experienced a surge in popularity during its PC and console beta phase last month, quickly becoming a top-played title for 2025. As with many modern games slated for Xbox release this year, BF6 is designed for both the high-end Series X and the more modest Series S. Developers have acknowledged that optimizing the game for the Series S presented unique challenges.

Earlier in the week, Kotaku interviewed two Battlefield 6 developers, focusing on the challenges of adapting the game for consoles. The question arose: did the team encounter difficulties ensuring smooth performance on the Xbox Series S, given the game’s complexity and scale? It’s well-documented that the Series S has posed optimization hurdles for developers. While BF6 leverages the “scalable” Frostbite engine, the Series S still required considerable effort.

“The primary challenge we faced was related to memory constraints,” stated Christian Buhl, technical director for Battlefield 6. “The Xbox Series S possesses even less memory than a mid-range PC configuration. There was a period, roughly six to twelve months ago, when we discovered that many of our level designs were causing crashes on the Xbox Series S.”

Consequently, the development team prioritized memory “optimization” within Battlefield 6. These optimizations weren’t limited to the Series S, however. Buhl noted that the process improved the game’s overall stability and performance across all platforms. Additional “specific optimizations” were also implemented specifically for the Xbox Series S.

“We conducted extensive testing, accumulating vast amounts of data,” Buhl explained. “After running all our levels through the testing process and identifying problem areas, we were able to resolve the majority of our memory-related issues on the Series S within a month or two.”

According to Buhl, Battlefield 6 is now “very stable” and runs with “excellent performance” on the Xbox Series S, targeting a “consistent 60 frames per second.” Footage from the game’s open beta running on the Series S appears to corroborate this claim.

EA Remains Silent on Battlefield 6 for Switch 2

Given the Frostbite engine’s adaptability and the team’s dedication to optimization, the possibility of BF6 running on a Switch 2 was raised. The game is even integrating gyro controls for PS5 and PS5 Pro, enabling quick actions through motion.

When questioned about the feasibility of running Battlefield 6 and Frostbite on a Switch 2, based on potential specifications, an EA representative intervened, preventing Buhl from answering.

“I’m sorry, I need to interject,” the EA rep stated. “We’re unable to comment on platforms beyond those Battlefield is confirmed for: Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PS5 Pro.”

Later, during a discussion about gyro controls, the Switch 2’s superior Joy-Con gyro sensors were mentioned.

“Exactly, yes,” was the response. So, at least there is confirmation from the developers of Battlefield 6 that they are aware of the Switch 2 having great gyro controls. Anything beyond that is still unconfirmed.

There’s much anticipation for the launch of Battlefield 6 on October 10, especially for players on PS5 Pro and high-spec PCs. However, acknowledging that not all players have access to these high-end platforms, the work done to optimize the game for the older and less powerful Xbox Series S is appreciated. Perhaps a solid version of BF6 for the Switch 2 could be a possibility in the future?
