SharpLink Gaming is doubling down on its digital asset strategy with a substantial purchase of Ethereum, valued at over $100 million. This strategic investment, executed during a period of lowered prices in the cryptocurrency market, is anticipated to optimize the company’s overall cost basis for its considerable ETH holdings.
Data from Arkham Intelligence reveals that an Ethereum wallet, identified as 0xCd9 and linked to SharpLink, recently moved $108.6 million in USDC stablecoin to Galaxy Digital’s specialized over-the-counter (OTC) trading division. The transaction was implemented in two stages: an initial transfer of 53.009 million USDC, immediately followed by a second transfer of 55.565 million USDC – both directed to the same Galaxy wallet.
Betting Big on Ether
This event underscores SharpLink’s persistent focus on growing its Ethereum reserves. Records show the same wallet previously completed ETH acquisitions totaling around $800 million. This latest purchase solidifies SharpLink’s status as possessing one of the most significant ETH positions among publicly traded companies. Arkham’s data indicates this recent investment could secure approximately 31,941 ETH based on current market valuations.
The carefully chosen timing of this accumulation is noteworthy. SharpLink’s actions mirror a broader market sentiment, with influential figures like Eric Trump recently encouraging investors to seize opportunities to “buy the dip”. Ethereum (ETH), alongside the broader digital currency landscape, has experienced a downward trend since reaching a peak of $3,900. This price correction has reduced the altcoin’s overall market capitalization, potentially making this a prime moment for value-based acquisitions.
Prior to this recent acquisition, SharpLink already controlled a notable 438,200 ETH, positioning them as the second-largest corporate Ethereum holder, only trailing MicroStrategy. Now, with a cumulative ETH investment potentially exceeding $1 billion, the company’s long-term conviction in blockchain technology is evident.
This expansion of ETH holdings comes amid increased engagement from institutional investors. The utilization of Galaxy Digital’s OTC services and the strategic use of USDC suggest a preference for efficient and controlled trading environments with minimal price slippage. SharpLink’s activities could inspire other organizations considering similar on-chain treasury management strategies.
