A fresh chapter unfolds in the iconic world of Silent Hill with this week’s launch of the eagerly awaited Silent Hill f. This new installment, denoted by “f,” plunges players into a completely reimagined setting, complete with original characters and a refined battle system, while staying true to the series’ core themes of unsettling psychological dread.
Dive Deeper: Silent Hill f: The Kotaku Perspective
While the combat mechanics lean towards more dynamic action compared to past games, a constant sense of looming danger persists. This elegantly crafted horror experience captivated me, but there are certain nuances I wish I had known beforehand. After countless hours navigating the mist in both Normal and Hard modes, I’m eager to share the insights that helped me survive.
1. Embrace the Power of Omamori
Silent Hill f, while firmly rooted in survival horror, incorporates a surprising layer of character customization. Hinako’s maximum health, stamina, and sanity can be enhanced, and she can equip omamori charms to amplify her capabilities. Increasing the number of available omamori slots requires spending faith at designated shrines.
Prioritizing stamina upgrades with your faith might be a good initial strategy, but regularly examining your collected omamori is essential for subtly refining your combat prowess. Acquiring an additional omamori slot can significantly boost your effectiveness in battle.
2. Don’t Hoard Offerings
The bizarre and terrifying landscape of Silent Hill f is littered with offerings such as antique combs and preserved animal remains. While these items serve no purpose other than to be exchanged for faith at shrines, they occupy valuable inventory space. I frequently found my inventory overloaded, only to discover a forgotten offering needlessly taking up room and hindering my progress.
Develop the habit of checking your inventory for offerings each time you visit a shrine, maximizing your available space for crucial items.
3. Prioritize Stamina, Then Sanity
Stamina proves to be an invaluable asset for Hinako. While she is proficient at fending off monsters with makeshift weapons, these implements degrade rapidly, and you will frequently face overwhelming odds. Therefore, enhancing your stamina to execute quick maneuvers in and out of combat is crucial. I recommend upgrading stamina first, followed by sanity.
Sanity governs your ability to perform powerful counter-attacks and Hinako’s charged melee strike (unlocked later in the game).
Ample stamina provides the means to evade enemy attacks, while sufficient sanity enables you to deliver devastating blows, minimizing damage taken and expediting enemy takedowns.
4. Avoid Unnecessary Encounters
The creatures lurking in the mist may appear daunting, but many are easily dispatched, particularly for those familiar with action-oriented games like Dark Souls. However, resist the temptation to eliminate every monster you encounter. While weapons in the Dark Shrine sections are durable, the scavenged pipes, crowbars, and knives found in Ebisugaoka are fragile and easily broken, leaving you defenseless.
Hinako is incapable of unarmed combat, rendering you completely vulnerable if disarmed. Choose your battles wisely and strategically.
5. Higashi: A Surprisingly Powerful Tool
Initially, I disregarded Higashi, the stamina-restoring item, as stamina management seemed manageable. However, upon facing one of the game’s early bosses in Hard mode, I discovered its surprising effectiveness.
Consuming Higashi not only replenishes stamina but also grants unlimited stamina for a significant duration. This offers a prime opportunity to spam dodges while relentlessly attacking without worrying about exhaustion.
6. Maintain Distance and Use the Camera for Reconnaissance
Silent Hill f relies minimally on jump scares. However, monsters frequently ambush you from hidden locations. These ambushes often trigger grab animations where the camera focuses on Hinako being brutally attacked.
Once this animation begins, there is no escape. Mashing buttons will not prevent a significant loss of health. Therefore, maintaining a safe distance from enemies is generally advisable.
Utilize the third-person camera to peek around corners and scout potential hiding places. The game emits subtle static (resembling a skipping record) when a monster is nearby, allowing you to use your senses to avoid unnecessary damage.
7. Counter-Attacks Become Easier with the Charged Attack
The timing of counter-attacks in Silent Hill f can initially be challenging. It requires waiting for the enemy to flash, holding the focus button, and then executing a heavy attack. As focusing drains sanity rapidly, performing a counter-attack can feel like a stressful juggling act.
However, unlocking Hinako’s charged light attack simplifies the process.
Since charging the light attack requires holding the focus button anyway, it primes you for a successful counter-attack. While charging, keep your eyes on the enemy. If they flash, immediately execute a heavy attack. Because you are already holding the focus button, the counter-attack will trigger.
8. Master the Perfect Dodge
Dodging just before an enemy strikes will trigger a brief period of slowed time and instantly replenish Hinako’s stamina. While the timing window is small, mastering this technique is crucial for surviving tougher encounters. Hinako’s stamina depletes quickly, so prioritize preserving and restoring it whenever possible.
9. Scavenge for Items During Boss Fights
Fragile weapons and scarce resources can create a sense of tension in Silent Hill f, particularly during boss battles. However, the game often provides hidden resources to help you succeed. While healing items were not crucial on “Story” difficulty, they become essential in Hard mode.

Fortunately, the game often spawns items during boss encounters. Scan the corners and other inconspicuous locations to find these hidden supplies.
10. Collect and Read Everything
Players who enjoy challenging games will appreciate the difficulty Silent Hill f offers. However, there is far more to the experience than battling the creatures lurking in the mist. Hinako meticulously documents her experiences and creates artwork, and neglecting the character entries and in-game documents will cause you to miss crucial details. The art design is phenomenal, and much of the game’s rich symbolism and exploration of Japanese folklore is found within Hinako’s journal.
11. Solve Puzzles Intentionally
Relying on brute force to solve puzzles in SHf will quickly lead to frustration. The puzzles typically involve too many variables for this approach to succeed, and it’s far more rewarding to solve them as intended.

While the clues may not always be obvious, carefully study Hinako’s notebook. You can quickly access it while examining a puzzle via the on-screen prompt.
Silent Hill f initially captivated me with its dark narrative, and its combat system develops a satisfying rhythm as you progress. Armed with these tips, hopefully you’ll encounter fewer broken weapons and escape with fewer encounters with the mannequin psychopaths.
