When Thomas White, a co-founder of Silk Road 2.0, was arrested by the National Crime Agency in 2014, authorities
confiscated 97 BTC. By 2017, investigators noticed that
50 BTC had been transferred from the seized digital wallet to a different address, with no
valid explanation.
Initially, the investigation focused on the possibility that White had somehow regained unauthorized access to
his crypto wallet. However, White claimed that only someone with inside access at the agency could have
executed the transaction.
Further investigation revealed that the
stolen Bitcoin was routed
through a mixing service known as Bitcoin Fog. From there, the cryptocurrency was transferred to various
exchanges and subsequently loaded onto prepaid cryptocurrency debit cards.
Records indicated that these debit cards were used to make purchases totaling over £109,000. The estimated
total benefit gained by Chowles as a result of his actions is believed to be in excess of £613,000.
Due to Chowles’ position, he had unrestricted access to the devices and accounts that had been
seized
from White. A subsequent investigation led to the discovery of a mobile phone that connected
Chowles
to the illicit transfers. Additionally, notebooks found in his office contained login credentials and other
pertinent details relating to White’s cryptocurrency holdings.
