The conventional method of investing in Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) involves acquiring it directly. This can be done through a digital currency exchange or a brokerage firm that provides access to it. A growing trend is to invest in publicly traded entities that maintain Bitcoin holdings, such as Bitcoin mining operations or companies with Bitcoin on their balance sheets. Examples include Strategy (NASDAQ: MSTR), MARA Holdings (NASDAQ: MARA), and Cipher Mining (NASDAQ: CIFR).
In some instances, the returns of these companies have exceeded those of Bitcoin itself. As of September 22nd, Strategy has seen gains of 1,650% over the past three years, compared to Bitcoin’s 522% increase. However, significant risks accompany investing in these types of ventures.
Companies holding substantial Bitcoin reserves on their financial statements are heavily dependent on the price of Bitcoin either rising or remaining stable. A sharp decline in Bitcoin’s value, a recurring event, could negatively impact these companies’ financial health.
Strategy, a pioneering firm in accumulating Bitcoin reserves, currently possesses 639,835 BTC, currently valued at approximately $72 billion. With a market capitalization of $98 billion, Bitcoin constitutes roughly three-quarters of the company’s overall valuation. MARA Holdings, a Bitcoin mining enterprise, exemplifies this trend even further. It holds 52,477 BTC, with an approximate value of $6 billion, and has a market capitalization of $7 billion.
Cipher Mining offers a contrasting approach to managing its Bitcoin assets. Unlike Strategy and MARA Holdings, which prioritize accumulating Bitcoin, Cipher Mining engages in regular Bitcoin sales. It holds 1,414 BTC, worth around $159 million, and boasts a market capitalization of $5 billion.
This doesn’t necessarily designate Cipher Mining as superior to the other companies. Rather, it employs a different strategy that results in reduced volatility compared to those with balance sheets heavily weighted towards Bitcoin. Investors seeking crypto-related stocks that are not simply Bitcoin reserve companies might find Cipher Mining worth investigating.
