OpenAI has broadened its portfolio by acquiring Software Applications, Inc., the innovators behind Sky, an AI-driven personal assistant designed for Mac operating systems.
Sky, currently in development and not yet released for public use, is envisioned as an intelligent overlay for Mac desktops, offering contextual assistance as users write documents, organize schedules, develop software, or utilize other applications.
The AI helper is engineered to observe on-screen activities and execute actions based on the surrounding context. The intent is for Sky to seamlessly integrate with user workflows, simplifying task management across diverse applications without constant user prompts.

Ari Weinstein, CEO and co-creator of Sky, commented that the driving ambition behind the project was to enhance the utility and user-friendliness of computers. His statement reads:
Our long-held vision has been for computers to become significantly more empowering, adaptable, and intuitive. With the advances in Large Language Models (LLMs), we are now positioned to realize this vision fully.
Notably, Sky’s creators have a track record of developing well-received tools. Weinstein and Conrad Kramer were previously behind Workflow, an application acquired by Apple and subsequently transformed into Shortcuts, a feature commonly found on Apple devices.
OpenAI refrained from disclosing the financial terms of the acquisition. Available records indicate that the acquired company secured $6.5 million in funding, supported by investors including OpenAI’s own CEO, Sam Altman, through an independent investment vehicle.
