facility, under the ownership of MARA Holdings.

The facility is situated just outside Granbury, in an unincorporated area of Hood County. Some locals, residing within a mile of the site, claim they’ve been struggling with persistent sound issues around the clock.

The site’s construction commenced in 2022 under the banner of Compute North. Following the company’s subsequent bankruptcy, MARA Holdings assumed control of the facility’s operations in January 2024.

In interviews featured by More Perfect Union on July 24 (see video here), people shared experiences of constant headaches, sleep disturbances, and elevated stress levels. One senior resident commented on the never-ending nature of the headaches, with the facility’s sound clearly audible in the background.

Some residents reported the severity of the issue had led to hospital visits for neighbors. One person even attributed the death of a horse to the ongoing disturbance.

According to environmental law expert Mandy DeRoche:

This isn’t your typical noise complaint like truck traffic. It’s a distinct type of noise pollution, a low-frequency hum originating from these operations that’s constant and unrelenting.

In October 2024, a coalition of area residents initiated legal proceedings against MARA (then operating as Marathon Digital) (legal document available here). Their lawsuit alleges emotional distress, physical harm, and the exacerbation of existing medical conditions due to the persistent noise.
