The layer-2 network of Ethereum, known as Abstract, has announced its decision to cease operations entirely. The project team indicated that the network will officially shut down on December 15th.

In their announcement, the team highlighted how the cryptocurrency landscape has evolved dramatically since the inception of Abstract. They noted that a standalone blockchain model centered on consumer-driven crypto applications has become unviable. The challenge of stagnating growth has arisen from a constrained DeFi ecosystem, limited liquidity on the network, minimal engagement with institutional investors, and a smaller budget compared to competing projects.

Over the past year, the Abstract team explored multiple strategies to enhance their product-market alignment and expand the network. However, they faced major hurdles due to the rapid shifts in the blockchain environment. Their announcement made it clear that they had to decide between pouring more resources into a network that was struggling to remain viable and opting for a complete shutdown.
