Vandal Hearts II, a somewhat forgotten strategy RPG released by Konami towards the PlayStation 1’s twilight years, holds a special place in the hearts of those who played it. Now, its most enduring and peculiar enigma has finally been unraveled. Deep within the game’s code existed a reference to Konami’s iconic shoot ’em up series, Gradius, hinting at a unique sword. However, no one could naturally trigger its appearance without resorting to cheats. Enthusiasts concocted elaborate theories, suggesting specific save files from other Konami titles, such as Suikoden, might be the key. It turns out the real answer involved a very scarce demo disc.
The Gradius Sword in Vandal Hearts II isn’t just a trivial Easter egg. Equipping this weapon grants access to a potent spell called “Ripple Laser.” This spell summons a fully rendered 3D model of the Gradius starfighter, the Vic Viper, which streaks across the battlefield, obliterating enemies. The animation is surprisingly elaborate considering it was never intended to be easily discovered. This led to decades of fervent speculation on online forums like GameFAQs, with players desperately trying to determine the exact in-game conditions required to unlock the Gradius Sword.
Three years prior, a small YouTube channel named Dragon Quarter re-shared footage from 2010 showcasing the Ripple Laser skill. Recently, Dragon Quarter provided a critical update. They stated on ResetEra, posting that after receiving information from a follower (who was tipped off by a recent GameFAQs post about Twitch streamer Karkalla who is currently playing through Vandal Hearts II) he confirmed that the Gradius Sword can be unlocked by downloading save data from the Dengeki PlayStation D22 (SLPM-80471), a demo disc included with Dengeki PlayStation Magazine Issue 116 (dated 1999-09-24).”
According to GameFAQs user Kern, the resolution emerged after a reference to the demo disc was found on an older Japanese website. They mentioned that a member of a Discord community located the relevant file on the D22 disc (available on eBay). They were unable to personally verify it but shared images of the file, and was able to open the save file on an English copy and confirmed that the Gradius sword was available for purchase. Dragon Quarter has corroborated this information.
This is precisely the type of deep-dive gaming lore many adore. Over the years, scattered players have claimed on forums to have stumbled upon the weapon early in Vandal Hearts II by sheer luck. Could there be an infinitesimal chance for it to appear randomly without the demo disc? The true answer remains obscured. It appears Konami primarily intended it as an exclusive bonus for owners of the demo disc, similar to modern deluxe edition pre-order bonuses that grant unique starting gear.
The most outrageous theory posited that a final save point from the original Suikoden, specifically at Gregminster, needed to be present on a memory card to trigger the Gradius Sword’s appearance in the shop. When this was disproven years ago, many believed the weapon could only be obtained via a hacked save file from a user named “Jean,” which was uploaded to GameFAQs over a decade ago. Now, players can acquire it by downloading a copy of the demo disc save, utilizing a PS3 memory card adapter to transfer the data onto a PS1 memory card, and playing the game the “official” way.
