The widely popular adventure RPG, Genshin Impact, is preparing for significant operational shifts that will impact users on older hardware, starting next month. Regrettably, this includes the original PlayStation 4, which will no longer be officially supported, nor will the game be available for new downloads on that console.
The game’s studio detailed these upcoming platform adjustments earlier this week, alongside elevated hardware requirements for optimal performance across all supported platforms.
MiHoYo stated that “limitations stemming from hardware capabilities and the increasing size of the application on the platform” are the primary reasons for discontinuing PS4 support. It’s important to note that the PlayStation 5 version of the game remains unaffected by these changes.
Due to the comprehensive nature of this transition for the free-to-play title, the phase-out process will be implemented in three distinct stages. Initially, the game will be removed from the PlayStation Store on September 10. Players who have previously installed the game will retain the ability to re-download it from their personal game library.
Subsequently, beginning February 25, 2026, all in-game purchases through both the in-game store and the PlayStation Store will be disabled. This includes all forms of currency top-ups and other purchasable items. Until the final discontinuation date on PS4, players can continue to redeem previously acquired items from the PlayStation Store within the game.
The final phase will commence on August 4, 2026, marking the complete cessation of official support for Genshin Impact on the PlayStation 4. Following this date, logging into the game on PS4 will no longer be possible, and no further updates or technical assistance will be provided for the platform.
In a separate development, Genshin Impact is also increasing the required hardware specifications for both PC and mobile platforms. Minimum and recommended system specifications are being adjusted upward, starting with the Song of the Welkin Moon version (expected to be version 6.0).
In contrast to the PS4 situation, while devices not meeting the minimum system requirements may still be able to launch the game, the developers caution that the gameplay experience will likely be degraded. Players on such devices should anticipate a range of performance problems, as future content is being developed with the updated specifications in mind.
As detailed on the official site, the updated system needs are reasonable, but players should definitely familiarize themselves with them moving forward.
Recently, Genshin Impact’s version 5.8 was launched, and its featured events introduced the character Ineffa alongside the return of Citlali and Mualani.
