Representative Craig, accompanied by Rep. Bryan Steil (R-Wi.), recently addressed the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, which saw overwhelming bipartisan support in the House last month. Meanwhile, the Senate Banking Committee is developing its own framework for cryptocurrency market regulation.
Although most Republicans are backing the bill, several Democrats express reservations, primarily due to the Trump family’s connections to the crypto industry, according to Craig.
“The main issue here is the involvement of the President’s family in this market, which poses a challenge in gaining Democratic support for the legislation,” she stated.
Craig noted that while there are provisions within the bill aimed at mitigating this conflict of interest, stronger measures are necessary to persuade additional lawmakers to endorse it.
“If we could incorporate language that effectively prevents potential conflicts of interest, I believe we would see significantly more Democrats backing it,” she added.
As the ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee, Craig leads the Democratic presence on the panel. This isn’t the first time she’s highlighted the Trump family’s engagement in the cryptocurrency space—during a committee hearing in June regarding the Clarity Act, she remarked that the President’s crypto dealings were complicating the discussion and suggested that Congress implement regulations on presidential trading activities in markets supervised by the CFTC, including cryptocurrencies.
Despite expressing these concerns, Craig chose to vote in favor of advancing the Clarity Act without any additional provisions being included.
