The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is poised to see its cryptocurrency industry surge to become its second-largest sector within the next half-decade. This impressive growth is fueled by the nation’s well-defined regulatory environment and an inviting atmosphere for crypto-related businesses, according to Chase Ergen, a leading voice from DeFi Technologies, a publicly listed firm specializing in digital asset investments.
In a recent interview with Cointelegraph, Ergen emphasized the UAE’s proactive approach: “They are recognized for their leadership, clear legal structures, and vibrant community.” He further elaborated on his forecast:
“Oil is currently their primary economic driver. However, I anticipate that within five years, the blockchain sector will become their second most significant industry, contributing a substantial, double-digit percentage to their overall economy.”
Ergen pointed to several factors contributing to the UAE’s crypto dominance: a transparent and supportive regulatory framework, a network of influential crypto industry figures, a strong, debt-free economy that allows for government investment in technology, a low crime rate, appealing tax incentives, and visionary leadership.
The UAE has established itself as the clear frontrunner in the Middle East and Africa (MENA) region for crypto and technology innovation. This position is strengthened by growing interest in crypto adoption among nations and the competitive drive among global powers to lead in the emerging field of digital finance.

Increased Crypto Adoption by Nations Observed in 2025
The year 2025 witnessed a significant acceleration in the adoption of cryptocurrencies by sovereign states, largely influenced by the return of Donald Trump to the presidency in the United States and the subsequent policy adjustments.
The Trump administration released its highly anticipated cryptocurrency report in July, detailing its strategic plan to position the US as the global leader in the crypto space.
In a significant policy shift, Pakistan’s government reversed its previous stance against cryptocurrencies in November 2024, just one day prior to the US presidential election.
Since then, Pakistan has taken concrete steps, including establishing a national Bitcoin reserve and forming a national crypto council tasked with developing a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets within the country.
Several sovereign wealth funds, including the UAE’s Mubadala and Norway’s sovereign fund, have demonstrated exposure to Bitcoin (BTC) through investments in exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and other investment instruments.
Notably, Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, the world’s largest state-managed investment fund, increased its Bitcoin holdings by a significant 192% in the past year, according to research from the crypto analysis firm K33.
