Why Holding ETH Could Be Your Best Bet When Everyone Else Is Selling
Investing in contrarian opportunities isn’t suitable for everyone, yet when they succeed, the potential rewards can be substantial. At present, the value of Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) hovers around $2,500, which is 47% lower than its record high from August 2025. Proclaiming it as a wise investment in a gathering of seasoned crypto enthusiasts might incite some eye-rolls, considering many have reached similar conclusions, purchased, and subsequently failed to match the returns of index funds over several years—much like what’s happened over the past five years.
Prior to hitting rock bottom in the crypto bear market at the end of June this year, even some of the most loyal Ethereum supporters finally relinquished their holdings. Consequently, Ethereum earned a reputation for being difficult to hold long-term. Its standing among crypto enthusiasts is quite mixed, and the underlying factors for this perception are significant. In fact, these elements provide a basis for viewing Ethereum as a contrarian investment still capable of wealth growth.
Did You Miss Out on Nvidia in 2009? A Unique Opportunity is Surfacing Again. Back in 2009, an exceptional “Double Down” signal appeared for an obscure chipmaker called Nvidia. Today, that same “Total Conviction” indicator is showing up for a company that is just 1/100th the size of Nvidia.Continue »

Ethereum still leads in DeFi capital compared to its competitors
As the premier smart contract blockchain and the second-largest cryptocurrency following Bitcoin, Ethereum faces recurring challenges.
Its transaction fees were previously excessively high, which frustrated users and hindered its widespread adoption. The approach taken to mitigate this problem—encouraging the development of third-party layer 2 (L2) networks for more economical traffic management—didn’t yield the expected results. Much of the activity shifted from the main chain to these L2s, resulting in a dramatic reduction of Ethereum’s fees.
As the network diminished some of its fee structure, the drop in fees led to a change in Ethereum’s circulating supply, shifting it from slightly deflationary to slightly inflationary, currently expanding at about 0.9% annually.
Furthermore, consistent strategy and governance have posed challenges. In February 2026, co-founder Vitalik Buterin acknowledged that the original strategy of endorsing layer 2 networks to manage transaction load no longer aligned with the platform’s needs. This valid observation, however, contributed to chaos within the ecosystem almost immediately, resulting in both co-executive directors of the Ethereum Foundation stepping down by June 2026.
In addition, cybersecurity has emerged as a persistent issue. In the first half of 2026, Ethereum experienced $332 million in losses due to hacks, the highest out of all networks. As capital attracts threats, Ethereum, being the richest in terms of assets, becomes the prime target.
Reasons to Consider Investing in Ethereum
Ethereum competes with several platforms, including Solana, BNB Chain, and Arbitrum, to name a few.
A number of these rivals, such as BNB Chain and Arbitrum, utilize the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), which is the network’s framework for executing smart contracts. Therefore, Ethereum’s technological advancements and development choices considerably influence the competitive environment. Moreover, while the leadership teams of its key competitors are skilled and driven, none possess the same level of respect that Buterin commands, particularly regarding technical matters. Buterin has long been regarded as a thought leader in the crypto space, and the innovations tested on Ethereum often set the precedent for broader implementation elsewhere.
Equally important is that Ethereum’s closest competitors don’t come close in securing as much capital within their ecosystems.
Ethereum boasts $54.1 billion in decentralized finance (DeFi) deposits, far outpacing Solana’s $6.6 billion, according to DefiLlama. The network also hosts $147.3 billion in stablecoins, surpassing the total value of the next nine chains utilizing its virtual machine. Additionally, Ethereum holds 43.1% of all tradable tokenized real-world assets, which are worth approximately $16.9 billion.
Furthermore, Ethereum serves as the main hub for talent in the crypto sector. With 31,869 active application developers, it surpasses any other chain in human capital concentration.
This powerful synergy of human and financial capital enables Ethereum to be at the forefront of new crypto projects and emerging segments within the space, often being the first to explore innovative concepts.
What Should Your Next Step Be?
In my view, Ethereum is a worthwhile investment today despite its flaws. Its consistent history of adapting to challenges, although it sometimes results in new issues arising, is a positive sign.
Over time, the challenges faced in its early days will likely fade from memory, and the coin’s value is expected to rise, regardless of any lingering issues.
