The team behind Wikipedia, the Wikimedia Foundation, has announced that the number of actual people visiting the site experienced a decrease of approximately 8% between May and August, in comparison to the same timeframe last year.

This shift became apparent after the Wikimedia Foundation enhanced its methods for identifying automated traffic. It was discovered that a substantial portion of previous visits originated from bots, with a significant number coming from Brazil.

With the data now adjusted for bot activity, it’s clear that genuine human engagement with Wikipedia has declined. A contributing factor appears to be the growing trend of search engines providing direct answers to user queries, negating the need to navigate to external websites.

These quick answers frequently utilize Wikipedia’s information, but users are no longer required to visit the website itself.

Marshall Miller, representing the Wikimedia Foundation, stated:

Following this adjustment to our data analysis, we’ve observed a decrease in page views from human users on Wikipedia over the recent months. This decline is approximately 8% compared to the corresponding months of the previous year, 2024.

This downward trend presents a significant challenge for the platform. A reduction in site traffic could lead to a decrease in volunteer contributions to articles and potentially lower donation levels, which are crucial for Wikipedia’s ongoing operation.

To address this, the Wikimedia Foundation is actively working on strategies to ensure proper attribution of sources and is investigating innovative methods to engage younger generations. These efforts include experimenting with content on popular platforms such as YouTube and TikTok.
