Recently, the challenging action RPG, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, received an update that, for some players, negatively impacted the experience. Apparently, a segment of the Chinese player base influenced a change that made several boss encounters unbeatable. For those who dislike how patch 1.5 alters the difficulty, especially within the game’s fourth area, a new modification allows players to revert to an earlier, preferred version.
To fully understand the impact of update 1.5, Jeremy’s article offers insightful details. In short, many significant enemies related to the Ming dynasty, when reduced to zero health, now simply collapse from exhaustion instead of dying. This alteration has a deep effect on both the gameplay and the narrative of Wuchang.
Echoing the situation with Fallout 4‘s problematic next-gen update from the prior year, modders are assisting players who want to downgrade their game to a previous build. AVK95 has released a mod, aptly named ‘Rollback censorship patch,’ to address this.
“Wuchang version 1.5 greatly diminishes the game’s appeal,” the mod author explains. “Many endgame bosses, non-player characters, and regular enemies now become merely exhausted instead of dying, offering unimportant dialogue instead of story-progressing conversations found in the original game. In essence, patch 1.5 has damaged the game’s storyline and the sense of immersion.”
This mod returns the game to version 1.4. Consequently, while it undoes the undesired boss alterations introduced by patch 1.5, it also removes helpful additions such as faster healing animations and improvements to Wuchang’s recovery from knockdowns. Downloading the mod provides a file named WuchangRollback.exe, which you must extract and execute within the game’s main directory.
After doing so, you will need to prevent the game from automatically updating. This is accomplished by accessing the game’s properties through your Steam library. Finally, to launch the game, you must click the ‘Project_Plague-Win64-Shipping’ file instead of using the “Play” button in Steam directly.
While this process requires multiple steps, Steam lacks a direct rollback feature similar to GOG.com’s integrated rollback system or even beta access to prior builds, making this mod the most accessible solution currently. As demonstrated with the Fallout update, other methods for reversing patches exist, such as re-downloading old depot files. But, this method can be complex unless you find precise instructions.
A better solution might emerge if a mod focuses solely on eliminating the controversial aspects of patch 1.5. Ideally, the developers, Lenzee, could offer a game version that achieves the same effect. Currently, AVK95’s mod remains the only option, and it is incompatible with the Xbox Game Pass version of Wuchang.
