The profitability of Bitcoin mining has dropped to its lowest point in two years, primarily due to record difficulty levels and a decline in on-chain fees. This situation has created a growing divide between miners managing to survive on slim margins and those adapting their operations to cater to the booming AI sector.
Previously, Bitcoin mining was a unified industry, closely related to Bitcoin’s price. However, it is now transforming into a two-tiered economy where the effectiveness of hashpower is becoming the key to success, overshadowing traditional energy strategies.
Currently, Bitcoin’s hashprice stands at approximately $42.14 per terahash per day, marking its position within the bottom 4% of its two-year performance range. Over the past month, this figure has dropped by 19%, exacerbated by Bitcoin’s market pullback to around $101,500.
The real culprit isn’t the spot price.
The underlying issue lies within the network’s structural math: difficulty has surged by 31% in the last six months, while hashrate increased by 23%. Simultaneously, fees that were once supported by ordinal activities and network congestion have plummeted to their lowest since spring. This results in a competitive environment where an increasing number of machines vie for diminishing rewards.
For smaller miners, these conditions are particularly harsh, as many face operational deficits, especially those bound to expensive energy contracts or utilizing outdated hardware. This scenario bears similarities to past market troughs in 2020 and late 2022, during which weaker competitors capitulated just before the market rebounded.
Yet, the current environment differs substantially due to the emergence of AI and high-performance computing (HPC), providing miners with alternative avenues, allowing some to shift their infrastructure to accommodate non-Bitcoin workloads.
This week, Iris Energy revealed a significant five-year, $9.7 billion agreement with Microsoft to deliver AI and data-center capacity, repurposing parts of its mining fleet for high-performance computing services. The stock market reacted positively as investors began to reassess IREN, Core Scientific, Riot Platforms, and Cleanspark as “AI infrastructure plays,” rather than solely Bitcoin miners.
This diversification is driving miner equities to rally, even amid falling hashprices. The market increasingly values operational flexibility and sustainable energy contracts over mere hash output.
In contrast, traditional miners tethered solely to Bitcoin production face severe limitations when margins tighten. Miner profits have hit their lowest since April, with hashprice figures around $43 per PH/s/day, reflecting multimonth lows. These companies exclusively receive payment in Bitcoin block rewards and transaction fees, which automatically decrease with every difficulty increase.
Without strategies to hedge their exposure or access to low-cost energy, these miners are left waiting for relief from block subsidies or a rise in network fees.
On the other hand, Marathon Digital demonstrates how scale can mitigate challenges. The company recently recorded $123 million in quarterly profits by enhancing operational efficiency and branching into AI hosting services. Their revenue now combines both mining and AI operations, showcasing the evolving role of a miner. Marathon’s extensive energy resources enable it to manage or redirect energy loads dynamically, selling excess power or leasing infrastructure for HPC tasks during less profitable Bitcoin mining periods.
This divergence is increasingly reflected in market data: equity investors are viewing the decrease in hashprices as less of a risk and more as a factor distinguishing miners with robust business models from those solely pursuing block rewards.
As noted in a recent report by Bernstein, “hashprice pain won’t impact miners who pivot towards AI.” This statement encapsulates the ongoing structural shift, where Bitcoin mining is evolving from a single-purpose model into a multifaceted data infrastructure business.
Anticipating the turnaround: several key indicators.
The first sign to watch for is a plateau or decrease in difficulty, which indicates that unprofitable hashrate is leaving the network, leading to a natural rebalance that increases the share of rewards for remaining miners.
The second is a revival in on-chain fees, whether sparked by congestion or a renewed interest in inscription-style demand. Both conditions could enhance hashprice without necessitating any change to Bitcoin’s market price.
The third and potentially most significant catalyst is the growth of AI or HPC contracts. Each megawatt diverted to these external workloads diminishes competition on the Bitcoin network and stabilizes margins for miners who remain active.
Other factors will also play a role: seasonal energy prices, incentives for load curtailment, and regional regulations will affect who can withstand extended periods of economic strain. Historically, mergers, liquidations, and site closures tend to accelerate when hashprices near cycle lows—often serving as a contrarian signal for the broader market, indicating potential improvement and renewed miner accumulation to follow.
The next difficulty increase will serve as the first true test of whether this compression has reached its peak. If hashrate growth stalls while fees begin to rise, hashprice could slowly revert toward equilibrium.
Until that occurs, the mining sector remains bifurcated between miners grappling with Bitcoin’s most challenging computations and those rewriting their operational models through AI.
