$SAND, the digital currency associated with The Sandbox platform, experienced substantial sell-offs amid reports about a possible vulnerability allowing unlimited token minting. Early indications suggest that a hacker might have exploited a flaw to generate an unrestricted number of new tokens. Nevertheless, The Sandbox team has yet to officially verify the existence or details of this vulnerability.
Social media chatter and various accounts monitoring online movements indicate that over 500 million new $SAND tokens may have been generated due to this security issue. If confirmed, this could signify a catastrophic security failure with potential repercussions for the token’s availability.
Market activity saw a notable uptick following these allegations. The valuation of $SAND plummeted by around 5.5% within a brief period, while the open interest (OI) in futures surged by roughly 16% in just an hour. Furthermore, trading volumes spiked to approximately 24 times the usual amounts, indicating a robust engagement with the price shifts.
However, the rapid decline in funding rates into negative numbers points to a significant increase in short positions within the market.
