Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) surged by 25% during August, thrilling many investors who are now eager to see where Bitcoin might go next. Could a major breakout be on the horizon?

Coinbase Global‘s CEO Brian Armstrong appears to believe so. In a recent interview with the Fox Business Network, he indicated that it is “very likely” Bitcoin will reach between $300,000 and $400,000 by 2030.

The Journey to Bitcoin’s $300,000 Goal

Nevertheless, a lot will need to align for this to materialize. Bitcoin must sustain its upward momentum and ideally close the year near the $100,000 mark, likely regaining the focus of both retail and institutional investors.

To achieve a value of $300,000, Bitcoin would need to experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 31.6%, and an increase of 41.4% CAGR would be necessary to hit $400,000.

Although these forecasts seem optimistic, they are not entirely unrealistic. Remarkably, Bitcoin has posted a CAGR of 33.6% from August 2017 to July 2026.

This period encompasses numerous dramatic downturns, such as a 73% drop in 2018 and a 64% decline in 2022. Moreover, Bitcoin has experienced a 36% drop since reaching its all-time high of $126,000 in October 2025.

This context makes Bitcoin’s decade-long performance notably impressive. Its growth has not been without setbacks, but each time it has managed to bounce back and reach new heights.

Moving forward, Bitcoin will require a significant trigger to ignite those three- or four-fold increases. Armstrong believes the key catalyst will be the passage of the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act. This proposed legislation aims to enhance the outlook for the entire cryptocurrency sector, with Bitcoin likely benefiting as well.

What Became of Bitcoin’s $1 Million Target?

However, it’s worth noting that last year, Armstrong was forecasting Bitcoin to reach $1 million by 2030. At the time, Bitcoin was climbing to new all-time highs, and the outlook seemed exceptionally promising.

Furthermore, it wasn’t just Coinbase pushing this prediction. Cathie Wood of Ark Invest also estimated that Bitcoin would be priced at $1 million by the end of the decade.

Yet, due to Bitcoin’s recent downturn, many analysts have had to retract their previous growth expectations. The era of Bitcoin doubling its value annually may be over. Instead, investors should prepare for growth rates around 30% to 40%.

Therefore, while Bitcoin remains a viable long-term investment option, be prepared for a potentially longer wait before seeing substantial returns.
