Hunter Biden, the son of former U.S. President Joe Biden, is set to launch a new memecoin project, diving into the cryptocurrency arena. This initiative, named “LAPTOP,” draws inspiration from the controversial “Hunter Biden’s laptop” saga and is slated for release on September 9th, utilizing Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer-2 network, Base.

Sources familiar with the project indicate that it alludes to the laptop that was publicized in 2020, which sparked extensive political discourse in the United States. The leaked data from the device, detailing Biden’s overseas business engagements and personal matters, has remained a hot-button issue in political debates for several years.

In recent weeks, Hunter Biden has significantly increased his presence in the media, appearing on numerous podcasts, television shows, and various platforms. He has shared optimistic views about the cryptocurrency sector, referring to decentralized digital currencies as the “inevitable future” in recent posts on X, and has commented on the dispute involving the Trump family’s World Liberty Financial and Justin Sun.

Founders to Retain 30% of Total Tokens

The LAPTOP project plans to issue 1 billion tokens, with the project’s founders, including Hunter Biden, holding 30% of the overall supply. It has been noted that these founder tokens are subject to a six-month selling restriction, and a vesting period of two years will follow.

Twenty percent of the total token supply will be allocated to select users through two separate distributions. This group will comprise investors who incurred losses with Donald Trump’s $TRUMP memecoin, subscribers to Hunter Biden’s Substack, and members of an email list curated by video journalist Andrew Callaghan.

The $TRUMP token, launched in January 2025, initially reached a market cap of around $15 billion before experiencing a steep decline. Currently, reports indicate that it has been trading around $2, bringing its market cap down to nearly $600 million.

A key aspect of the LAPTOP project will be its token burning mechanism, which will be activated by specific political and financial milestones. The founders have indicated that, should 30 designated events occur within a set timeframe, up to 30% of the total token supply could be burned.

Potential triggers for the token burn include the Democratic Party candidate winning the 2028 U.S. presidential election, Bitcoin achieving a new all-time high, and LAPTOP’s fully diluted market cap overtaking that of $TRUMP.

If these anticipated events do not transpire, a proportional segment of tokens intended for burning will be donated to charitable causes.

The remaining 20% of the tokens will be directed toward charitable initiatives, liquidity provisions, distributions for exchanges and market makers, and covering the accounting, legal, administrative, and compliance costs associated with the project’s foundation.

The launch of LAPTOP highlights the ongoing trend of memecoins within U.S. politics. Previously, tokens associated with figures like Donald Trump, Melania Trump, and former New York Mayor Eric Adams saw rapid initial price surges but subsequently plummeted in value. Due to their volatile nature and lack of intrinsic value, memecoins are often categorized as high-risk investments in the cryptocurrency space.

This token carries similar risks, urging users to proceed with caution.
