Crypto Tycoon Makes Waves with $49M Donation to Far-Right Reform UK

The latest contributions boost the total funding pledged to Reform to $97 million since Friday.

A second billionaire from Britain has donated nearly $49 million to the right-wing Reform UK party, matching another businessman’s contribution from the previous day.

In a Saturday article for the Daily Telegraph, donor Christopher Harborne stated that his $48.7 million (£36 million) donation represents a “philanthropic gift” to the nation, expressing his motivation to equal the contribution made by fellow billionaire Ben Delo just 24 hours earlier.

Sixty-three-year-old Harborne is a cryptocurrency investor residing in Thailand, while Delo, who is 42, co-founded the BitMEX cryptocurrency exchange.

These contributions raise the total financial support pledged to Reform since Friday to $97 million.

This comes amid a wave of inquiries regarding the party’s finances, with the Metropolitan Police in London announcing earlier this week that they have initiated a criminal investigation to determine whether Reform has accepted illegal foreign funds.

Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform, expressed his gratitude for the donations in a post on X.

“What do Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne desire? Nothing,” Farage remarked.

“Just a government capable of repairing Britain. That’s exactly what Reform UK is here to provide,” he added.

Kemi Badenoch, head of the right-wing Conservative Party, criticized Reform, accusing Farage and his team of lacking ethics.

“You can acquire staff and advertising, but you cannot purchase judgment or integrity,” Badenoch wrote on X.

“Sometimes a larger check simply leads to repeating the same errors. The Conservatives are prepared for the challenge.”

Reform has become a significant player in UK politics. Nonetheless, the most recent polling indicates that the party may have lost support since leftist Andy Burnham succeeded Keir Starmer as Prime Minister and Labour leader.

According to Al Jazeera’s Camille Nedelec reporting from London, both of Reform’s latest benefactors believe their donations help create a fairer political landscape.

“One reason Ben Delo provided this substantial record-setting donation was to even the political playing field,” Nedelec noted.

“This sentiment is also shared by fellow billionaire Christopher Harborne, who likened Reform UK to a startup needing a boost due to its lack of established financial backing compared to traditional political parties.”

“They view this as a means of enhancing fairness in British politics. Historically, Reform has received significantly fewer donations than established political parties,” she continued.

Reform is the successor to Farage’s Brexit Party, which rebranded itself in 2021. Farage, who was instrumental in the Brexit movement, has consistently portrayed himself as an anti-establishment figure and has seen a rise in popularity as voters become disenchanted with the Conservatives and Labour. Although these two parties have traditionally dominated UK politics, a recent decline in living standards has increased the demand for alternative options.
