Open interest reflects the total value of outstanding futures contracts, but a complete understanding of the risks associated with these positions also involves analyzing account leverage and the collateral backing them.

The ongoing exposure remains close to the upper limits of Glassnode’s statistical analysis. Payments for long positions surged from $926,400 to $1.5 million, indicating that the reduction in open interest coincided with a heightened demand for bullish perpetual contracts.

Impact of Recent Activities on Risk Assessment

In its March 2025 Market Pulse glossary, Glassnode defines Hot Capital Share over a duration of three months.

Additionally, its method for assessing realized-cap age bands assigns values to coins based on their last transaction price and divides each band’s value by the total realized capitalization, which is the cumulative value of the coin supply during its last movement.

When older coins are transacted, their age resets, and their realized value is updated. This allows longstanding holders to bring dormant coins back into play and enhance the economic relevance of recently circulated coins. However, merely analyzing activity cannot pinpoint first-time investors or recent fiat contributions.

The supply ratio compares the amount of coins held by short-term holders to those held by long-term holders. Currently at 14.2%, this indicates that for every 100 units of long-term supply, there are approximately 14.2 units of short-term supply.

Glassnode classifies holders by grouping addresses into entities and averaging their holding age classifications, centered around a midpoint of 155 days, while excluding balances held on exchanges.

Newer holder cohorts tend to liquidate their positions more readily during times of volatility. Their increasing presence supports ongoing price sensitivity, though the timing and direction of future expenditures remain uncertain.

The report’s cumulative volume delta—showing the balance between buyer-initiated trades and seller-initiated trades—shifted from a negative $102.8 million to a positive $33.2 million. This metric reflects trading dynamics, and its improvement suggests a move towards a buyer-dominated market without providing insights into new investor capital.

The next challenge lies in whether sustained demand will absorb the active supply. Ongoing spot buying could alleviate concerns regarding market fragility, while renewed selling by takers and declining profitability for holders could exacerbate it.

Therefore, it’s crucial to evaluate futures exposure in conjunction with holder activities. The snapshot from October reveals a reduced presence of derivatives alongside a rise in recently active capital, with improved spot buying acting as a balancing force. The sensitivity of holders remains a distinct risk factor to monitor.
