He noted that Bitcoin has reached a scale where affluent investors are increasingly considering it as a method to diversify their portfolios instead of anticipating a dramatic increase in value within a short period.
Lee identified wealthy investors as a significant yet underutilized source of capital in the cryptocurrency space, asserting that their tendency to adopt a long-term holding strategy could position Bitcoin as a valuable addition for more investors. However, data concerning family offices indicate that widespread adoption remains limited.
Affluent Crypto Investors Favor a Long-Term Perspective Amid Limited Adoption
Several wealthy investors increasingly highlight long-term growth and portfolio diversification as primary motivations for engaging with cryptocurrency.
According to Lee, the expansion of Bitcoin’s reach has enhanced its potential as a portfolio diversifier. For instance, an investor may choose to allocate 5% to gold and another 5% to Bitcoin, rather than seeking quick profits.
Recent statistics show that affluent investors currently holding cryptocurrency are adopting a more long-term mindset towards this asset class.
A CoinShares study conducted on Monday, which surveyed 2,230 individuals with a minimum of $500,000 in investable assets, revealed that long-term growth and diversification were cited as the primary reasons for investing in cryptocurrency, with short-term speculation ranking at the bottom. Among these digital asset investors, 80% owned Bitcoin.
Despite this, cryptocurrency has not yet become a commonplace investment among wealthy families.
A report from JPMorgan, released in February and based on a survey of 333 single-family offices across 30 countries, found that 89% had no exposure to cryptocurrency, and their average allocation to crypto and digital assets stood at a mere 0.4%. Only 17% of the participants regarded crypto and digital assets as significant investment themes.
