The CME Group (NASDAQ:CME | CME Price Forecast), a prominent derivatives exchange based in Chicago, is set to introduce Uniswap futures on October 19, 2026. Despite this news, the price of Uniswap (CRYPTO:UNI) has declined by 20.8% in the fortnight leading up to October 17. At present, a single standard futures contract represents 10,000 UNI tokens, equating to approximately $72,500 based on current market values, though the official launch is subject to regulatory approval.

The CME Group (NASDAQ:CME | CME Price Forecast), a leading Chicago derivatives exchange, plans to offer Uniswap futures beginning on October 19, 2026. However, the announcement has been followed by a significant decline in Uniswap’s price (CRYPTO:UNI), which has seen a 20.8% drop in the two weeks leading up to October 17. Currently, each futures contract signifies 10,000 UNI, valued around $72,500 according to the latest prices, assuming regulatory reviews are completed successfully.

Futures contracts act as agreements to buy or sell an asset at a predetermined price on a specified future date. The CME’s offering provides large institutional investors a compliant method to trade UNI. Nonetheless, as of October 18, UNI is trading at $7.25, which is nearly 34% lower than its peak of $10.93 on September 23. This situation raises a critical question: why is the token losing value just as Wall Street is preparing to engage in the market?

Profit-Taking by Early Investors Ahead of CME Launch

Following the CME’s announcement regarding Uniswap futures on September 22, UNI experienced a sharp increase of 13.7%, rising from $8.99 at the opening to $10.22 at closing. This scenario exemplifies a typical “buy the rumor, sell the news” action, where investors rushed to take advantage of the expected launch, subsequently selling their holdings to realize profits. With the CME launch approaching on October 19, many traders who purchased in September have already exited their positions.

Data from on-chain metrics supports this observation. CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost noted in an October 17 report that UNI appears to be experiencing a distribution phase, indicating that holders are transferring tokens to exchanges in preparation for sale. Increased inflow to exchanges backs this assertion, showing tokens moving from private wallets to trading platforms such as Binance.

The inflows into UNI on Binance peaked in late September but have since tapered off. According to Darkfost, this decline in incoming tokens might indicate a possible price bottom. Nevertheless, UNI continued to fall on October 17, even as Binance selling pressure eased, suggesting buyers have not yet entered the market to counterbalance selling.

UNI Experienced a Decline in Early October, but Support Held Around $6.74

UNI experienced a 21.6% decline, falling from $9.08 on October 5 to $7.12 by October 8. Notably, trading volumes on October 7 and 8 were the month’s highest, reflecting substantial selling pressure that contributed to this downward movement.

Since that time, buyers have defended a crucial price point. UNI hit lows of $6.74 on October 13 and $6.78 on October 15 but managed to close above these values. It’s worth noting that the highest trading volume occurred on September 18 during the price upswing, while trading activity in October has been relatively subdued.

UNI Outperformed by Bitcoin and Ethereum, Resulting in a Larger Decline

In comparison to leading cryptocurrencies, UNI has underperformed in the last month. From September 17 to October 17, UNI decreased by 6.3%, while Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) saw a gain of 6.8%, Solana (CRYPTO:SOL) rose by 2.7%, and Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH) only fell 1.1%. During the week leading up to October 18, UNI recorded a 4.5% decline, positioned between Solana’s 5.2% drop and Ethereum’s 3.6% fall, while Bitcoin witnessed a mere 1.4% decrease.

The current weakness in UNI can largely be traced back to its prior surges. Over the two months leading up to October 17, UNI skyrocketed by 121.5%, whereas Bitcoin and Ethereum saw increases of around 26% each and Solana recorded a 35.5% rise. Such a rapid surge often prompts profit-taking among holders, which can amplify selling pressure. Furthermore, UNI’s market capitalization is significantly smaller than Bitcoin’s, meaning that even a slight sell-off can severely impact its price.

Can CME’s Uniswap Futures Halt UNI’s Price Decline?

The upcoming futures launch is not expected to immediately reverse the decline of UNI. The price surge in September likely factored in the announcement of the listing, and any delays in regulatory approvals could extend the wait. Additionally, futures contracts allow traders to take short positions – profiting from falling prices – without needing to acquire UNI. While hedging could provide some support to prices, initial trading volume for new futures contracts tends to be limited; for instance, Ethereum futures only garnered 388 contracts on their inaugural day at CME back in February 2021.

To date, the CME announcement has generated a “sell-the-news” sentiment regarding UNI, and a swift change in market direction seems unlikely. Should UNI close below the $6.74 low from October 13 after the futures contracts commence, it would indicate persistent selling pressure. Conversely, if UNI manages to close above $9.08—the price from October 5—it may signal the entry of new investors ready to take over where the sellers left off.
