This week, Bitcoin approached the $80,000 milestone as billions in short positions were liquidated and spot demand re-emerged, igniting discussions about whether the recent decline has hit its lowest point. While Bitcoin captured the spotlight, analyst John Gillen, speaking on the Milk Road Show, suggested that Ethereum might be quietly positioning itself for a more substantial shift in comparison to Bitcoin.

At the moment, Bitcoin is trading just below the $80K threshold.

Bitcoin’s Short-Term Prospects

John mentioned that the recent movements in the market have changed his perspective on Bitcoin’s future. When asked about his prediction for Bitcoin’s price in a week, he stated:

  • He anticipates Bitcoin surpassing $82,000 within the week.
  • He described the current market situation as a “coin toss,” indicating uncertainty about whether it will transition back into a bullish trend or fall short.
  • He noted that momentum and fear of missing out (FOMO) seem to dominate the market for now, although he expressed some doubt about the sustainability of the recent surge.

Ethereum: A Cryptocurrency to Keep an Eye On

When comparing Ethereum to Bitcoin, the guest was cautious about predicting an imminent “flippening,” although he highlighted several key indicators:

  • Market Dominance: He emphasized that most activity involving tokenization, stablecoins, and what he termed “agentic finance” is still predominantly taking place on Ethereum, which retains its leadership in these sectors.
  • Technical Breakthrough: The ETH/BTC ratio, which has been in a downtrend for about a decade, has recently broken free from that trend.
  • Caution on Follow-Through: He cautioned that this breakout might not hold, and Ethereum’s ratio against Bitcoin could retrace to the previous downtrend before any significant market shift occurs.

He clarified that this does not guarantee Ethereum will outshine Bitcoin in this cycle, but highlighted that the combination of a technical breakout and Ethereum’s underlying use case warrants attention, especially given the potential implications of a shift in market leadership.
