According to Emma Landriault of JPMorgan, this move signifies a growing alignment between traditional finance and the cryptocurrency sector.
The financial powerhouse JPMorgan is set to offer its USD-denominated deposit token, JPM Coin (JPMD), on Ethereum, aimed specifically at its institutional clientele. The robust liquidity and asset tokenization on Ethereum make it an ideal public blockchain choice for JPMD.
JPMorgan Introduces Deposit Token to Ethereum for Institutional Users
With over $5 trillion in assets under management, JPMorgan Chase is expanding its efforts in blockchain payments by introducing its deposit token to Ethereum as Wall Street becomes increasingly open to utilizing public networks for financial transactions.
JPM Coin, which reflects dollar deposits held at the bank, is now available for institutional clients on the Ethereum platform, as reported by Bloomberg on October 19.
The token was initially launched last year on the Base blockchain affiliated with Coinbase, enabling clients to conduct real-time transactions 24/7.
“This year has clearly marked an increased integration between traditional finance and cryptocurrency,” noted Emma Landriault, head of Kinexys Labs at JPMorgan. “It’s beyond just Wall Street adopting public chains; institutional web3 entities are becoming more intertwined and forming alliances with traditional financial organizations,” she further stated.
This launch coincides with a push from banks and major financial institutions seeking innovative ways to transition assets efficiently and break away from the constraints of conventional financial systems. The convergence between traditional finance and crypto has seen an upsurge in tokenization adoption.
J.P. Morgan has added a cash component to the existing products on the Ethereum mainnet, which include tokenized money market funds like MONY and JLTXX.
As reported by CoinGape, JPMorgan is enhancing its Digital Assets and Blockchain Solutions team as it investigates tokenized deposits, blockchain payment systems, digital assets, and new consumer products.
The price of Ethereum surged over 1% to reach a 24-hour peak of $2,445 and is currently trading at $2,434, driven by a recent rebound in the cryptocurrency market. Additionally, trading volume has surged by 42% in the last 24 hours, signaling heightened interest from traders.
As global banking institutions integrate money market funds and deposit tokens into public blockchain platforms, there is an increasing demand for regulated custody solutions for tokenized assets to ensure asset protection.
