Ethereum is currently positioned nearly 25% below a crucial psychological threshold, with increasing ETF outflows and Bitcoin gaining momentum. The prospect of ETH making a significant recovery by the end of the year hinges on a limited set of specific factors aligning…

Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH) is trading at $2,417 as of October 18, 2026, needing approximately a 24% upswing to regain the $3,000 level it last reached back in January. This current price represents an 18.5% drop from the closing value of $2,967 recorded at the end of 2025. So far in October, Ethereum has reversed a considerable portion of its summer gains.

At the beginning of October, ETH closed at $2,706 but subsequently fell 11.6% over the next two weeks, including a 5.2% decline in the week leading up to October 17. On October 15, ETH reached an intraday low of $2,313, the lowest point since the $2,220 low noted on August 20. The closing prices of approximately $2,420 on October 14 and 16 were the weakest seen since mid-September. Can ETH make a comeback to $3,000 before the end of 2026?

A 24% Rise Needed for ETH to Hit $3,000

For ETH to rebound to $3,000 from its current price of $2,417, it must increase by about 24.1%, which equals roughly $583 per coin. The primary obstacle to surpass is the $2,807 intraday high achieved on September 21, the peak since July. Even if ETH surpasses this landmark, it will need an additional 6.9% to hit the $3,000 target.

In September, ETH recorded its highest monthly close of 2026 at $2,684, and traders have been testing the $2,684 to $2,807 range without sustained success.

The last occasion ETH traded above $3,000 was in January when it peaked at a monthly high of $3,405. After reaching $2,474 in February, it hasn’t climbed back over $3,000 since. The latest monthly close above that mark took place in October 2025, at $3,846.

For context, ETH is presently trading 51.1% below its August 2025 peak of $4,946, indicating that $3,000 remains a recovery objective still far from establishing a new all-time high.

Significant Outflows from Ether ETFs Total $955 Million in October

Ether ETFs, which represent investments in Ethereum, have experienced significant net withdrawals. From October 1 to October 16, Ether ETFs saw $955 million in outflows, according to SoSoValue. Notably, outflows occurred every day during that period, except on October 13, when inflows totaled $24.8 million.

These withdrawals indicate that fund managers are liquidating ETH to return cash to investors who are redeeming their shares, reflecting the necessity for several weeks of consistent inflows to bolster the $3,000 target.

Bitcoin’s Momentum, Not the Hoodi Test, May Propel ETH

Typically, ETH tends to reflect Bitcoin’s fluctuations (CRYPTO:BTC). In the 60 days up to October 17, both ETH and Bitcoin recorded nearly identical increases, with ETH climbing 26.3% and Bitcoin 26.1%.

However, the last month revealed a divergence: Bitcoin gained 6.8%, while ETH dropped 1.1%, suggesting ETH is trailing behind despite a more stable crypto environment. As of October 18, Bitcoin is priced at $81,977. Should Bitcoin continue on its upward trajectory, it could help lift ETH and make the $3,000 target more attainable.

While Ethereum developers have scheduled larger block tests on the Hoodi test network for October 26, such milestones seldom initiate significant price movements for ETH. The test network allows developers to experiment without endangering user funds, but it usually fails to generate investor interest.

ETH has seen remarkable gains previously. For example, from a closing price of $1,794 in April 2025, it surged to $3,698 by July 2025—a staggering 106% increase in just three months. However, this surge was driven by strong buying momentum, which is currently lacking as indicated by the October ETF outflows.

In order for ETH to realistically achieve $3,000, several factors will likely need to align. First, it must maintain a price above the $2,313 low recorded on October 15. Furthermore, Ether ETFs need to transition from experiencing outflows to consistent inflows. Lastly, ETH should break and hold above the $2,807 high set in September. If these conditions are met, a serious attempt to reach $3,000 could take shape.

Will Ethereum Hit $3,000 Before the End of 2026?

At this moment, it seems unlikely for ETH to reach $3,000 before December 31, 2026. Although a 24% increase keeps the target feasible, the trend in ETF flows suggests otherwise. A close below $2,313 could drive ETH down toward the $2,220 low seen in August, possibly postponing the $3,000 target until 2027.

Key indicators to monitor include achieving a daily close above $2,807 by the end of November, complemented by positive weekly ETF inflows. If these developments do not occur, the $3,000 target is likely to remain out of reach in 2026.
